“We’ve been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in twenty-seven years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet.”
Seriously? But you killed Napster, you dumb dick! I understand that twenty-five-odd years of having to stare at Hetfield’s ass from behind your drum kit has probably warped your brain in way I could never grasp, but… Really?
He infers that Metallica’s lawsuit against Napster was because they wanted to keep full control of their music and points to the fact that they sell MP3s of their shows on their website. But he seems to be missing what Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails understood; once the records were out they had absolutely no control over them any more. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails made a lot of money by giving up control of their music to their fans.
Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails are clever and succeeded. Metallica are not clever and will fuck this one up horribly.
